Its more than 50 active glaciers are all that remain of the great ice sheet that once covered the region. Jrinnell Glacier, the park's largest, is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. It covers 298 acres (121 ha) and is up to 500 feet (150 m) thick! The grizzly bear and the bald eagle are among the animals that are protected in Glacier National Park.
